Our Mission At Heart
We are a community focused practice with the primary mission of providing education, transparent options, and a non-judgmental, peaceful environment in which clients can make informed decisions for their pet family members.

Our Story
Founded in 2022, Sirius Veterinary Care is more than just a veterinary clinic; it’s a culmination of a lifelong dream, a passion for veterinary medicine, and a commitment to the community. Named after the main star in the Canis Major constellation, Sirius Veterinary Care symbolizes seriousness in pet health care and is a playful homage to one of our favorite literary characters, Sirius Black.
Dr. Heather R. Powell, the heart and soul of Sirius Veterinary Care, brings her extensive experience and unwavering passion to the practice. After earning her DVM at the young age of 23, Dr. Powell served in the US Army, a journey that helped shape not only her professional life but also her personal life, leading her to her soulmate. Settling back in the land of 10,000 lakes in 2020, Dr. Powell envisioned a veterinary practice that embodied her values – a community-focused, non-judgmental environment where pet parents are encouraged to be active participants in their pets’ health.

Puppy & Kitten Care
At Sirius Veterinary Care, we understand that owning a puppy or kitten is an exciting and rewarding experience. We are well-equipped to provide the best care for your pet’s physical health, from vaccinations and deworming treatments to spaying/neutering and microchipping. We can also provide advice on diet and behavior—helping you to make sure your puppy or kitten grows up healthy and happy!
Puppy Care: Puppies require special attention during the first year of life, as they can easily get sick. We recommend scheduling regular checkups for your pup during their first 12 months of life to ensure they are growing up strong and healthy. Vaccines also need to be kept up-to-date during this time and our doctor can help you determine what’s best for your particular pup.
Kitten Care: Kittens require equally as much care as puppies, but their life stages are slightly different. While it’s important to get them microchipped and vaccinated, we also recommend that they be spayed/neutered as soon as possible. Our vets can help you figure out the best time to do this and provide advice on diet, exercise, and behavior so your kitten grows up healthy and happy.
At Sirius Veterinary Care, we’re here to make sure that your puppy or kitten receives the best care possible. We look forward to supporting you every step of the way on your pet parenting journey!

Frequently Asked Questions
Are you accepting new clients?
Yes, we are delighted to welcome new clients! At Sirius Veterinary Care, we’re always eager to expand our pet-loving family and provide exceptional care for your canine and feline companions.
What age should a puppy or kitten be spayed or neutered?
We recommend that puppies and kittens reach skeletal maturity before undergoing spaying or neutering procedures. This age varies among different breeds and sizes of animals, typically falling between 6 and 18 months. Waiting until skeletal maturity allows for proper growth and development, potentially reducing the risk of certain health issues later in life. However, the ideal timing can vary, so we encourage you to discuss your pet’s specific needs with one of our veterinarians to determine the best timing for this procedure.
Does my dog/cat really need year-round heartworm protection in Minnesota?
Yes, we strongly recommend year-round heartworm protection for both dogs and cats in Minnesota. Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes, which can be present during the warmer months and potentially year-round in some indoor environments. Continuous protection is crucial to prevent heartworm disease, which can be serious and potentially fatal while also being preventable with regular medication.
Can I transfer my prescription?
You can transfer your prescription to or from our clinic for a nominal administrative fee. This charge covers the cost associated with managing and transferring prescriptions. We encourage you to visit our online store that features competitive pricing on medications, ensuring you receive the best value. Additionally, you can rest assured that since we know your pet’s health history, we will advise on complications with other medications your pet may be taking. Our comprehensive approach to your pet’s health allows us to provide personalized recommendations and ensure that any new prescriptions are compatible with their existing treatment plans. Our knowledgeable staff is always available to answer any questions you may have about transferring prescriptions or managing your pet’s medication regimen. By choosing our online store, you not only benefit from competitive pricing but also from the convenience and confidence of knowing that your pet’s health is being managed by professionals familiar with their medical history.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept various forms of payment, including checks, cash, and credit cards. Please note, a 3% processing fee is applied to credit card transactions, which does not exceed our cost of acceptance for the use of a card. This fee helps us manage processing costs while continuing to offer high-quality care and services to your pets. We strive to make our payment process as convenient as possible for you.
Do you offer wellness plans?
While we do not offer traditional wellness plans, we encourage you to inquire about Sirius Savings! Our goal is to ensure your pets receive the care they need without financial strain, so please don’t hesitate to ask our staff for more information on how Sirius Savings can benefit you and your pet.
